Eltz Castle, Rhine Region, Germany

When we left Switzerland, we headed to Bacharach, Germany. Unfortunately, it was rainy the entire time we were there, so I didn't get any pictures of the town itself. That, and I think I was tired of taking pictures. However, we went and saw some of the castles along the Rhine, and took a tour of Eltz Castle. This wasn't a showy castle like the others we'd seen, but it was the one that made me feel like I'd see knights in the surrounding forests. It was misty and I kept expecting to see archers and medieval soldiers coming out of the trees.

Snuggled in the middle of a forest, this is a beautiful castle. It's not the opulent castles of King Ludwig, but an obviously working castle in a beautiful setting.

After walking down the trail, we end up next to the castle, which has.. a MOAT! None of the other castles we'd seen had such a thing. Mind you, the moat was a tiny river far below, but it's a start.

Okay, and it doesn't have a drawbridge, it has a normal bridge, but still, I felt like it was at least trying to get into the spirit of things. Here you can see the surrounding forests and lands. It was truly a beautiful setting.

Close up to the castle, you can see the ivy that grew up the sides as well as some of the architectural details.

As we were walking around the outside, we found this little guy. He wasn't very active (it was really cold out) and he let us take pictures of him.

One last look at the side of the castle and it's bridge, and then it was time to head back. Then the next day we drove back to Frankfurt and flew home in the worst plane ever. But it was good to be home where I didn't feel embarrassed about not knowing the language. However, I'm really glad I went, and I'd love to go again, someday.
