Hohenschwangau Castle

Hohenschwangau is the castle that King Ludwig II stayed in while watching over the building of Neuschwanstein. It has a clear view of Neuschwanstein as well as having the added benefit of being quite nice itself. While it was more "used" looking, it did seem a tad more reasonable and certainly saw more service than Neuschwanstein ever did.

This is the view of Hohenschwangau from the lake. It had a strange orange yellow color that I wouldn't normally associate with a castle, but it sure made it easy to find.

Another view from below, where you can see more of the wall. The color of the castle is better represented in this picture.

A view of the castle from the trail. While not as impressive from the outside, the inside of the castle was actually quite nice. I thought Neuschwanstein's interior was nicer, but Hohenschwangau did have a secret passageway between the King and Queen's bedrooms. You can't beat that!

This is the view of Neuschwanstein from the small courtyard garden at Hohenschwangau.

This is the gate looking out of the castle. This leads to the back side of the castle, which was mostly forest.

Looking back towards the castle, you can see some of the painting and statue work on the castle.

The lake was rather close to Hohenschwangau. After visiting the castle, we walked down to see it. Crystal clear, it made for a fine location for two great castles.
