Ruin outside Reutte, Austria

Reutte was one of my favorite places we stayed. It was small, quaint, and the people at the Gasthaus were wonderful! They even played us a movie about the Tirol region which included a bit on slapdancing. If you can watch slap dancing and keep a straight face, you are a stronger person than I. I had to excuse myself because I had tears running down my face from holding in my mirth.
Up the hill above town was this great ruined castle. We hiked up there and for most of the time we were there, had it to ourselves. Eventually a local couple came up there as well.

After you finish the hike, you come to the lower wall. The castle itself is still quite a ways up the hill. You can see how overgrown everything has become, which is too bad, since it's a beautiful location.

Mischa and Scott pose in front of the castle on the hill. At night, the castle was lit up and you could see it from the autobahn. That was one of the neatest things about Europe, they lit things up at night!

Coming up to the castle, you can see the old outer walls. Nothing was left to give clues as to what the castle used to look like, and what areas were used for what.

There was a bit of a field with this house near the base of the hill the castle was on. The field had an amazing view of the towns below in the valley. And as you can see, it was a beautiful day.

A picture looking up at one of the faces of the castle. I wish I knew what it used to look like.

Looking down from the trail to the castle onto the field. You can sort of see Scott and Mischa roaming around the grounds.

Up at the castle itself, looking down. You can get an idea of the wonderful view that they had. Ruette is the town on the left side of the picture. You can see what I mean about it not being large!

This is one of the walls. The weird thing about this, was that we DID see some people up patching up the walls. I'm not sure if they're keeping up the ruins or trying to rebuild it somehow. It was pretty strange, all in all.

One of the many ruined walls. It was pretty spectacular seeing just the reinforced sides of the walls jutting into the air. And you just can NOT beat that view.

Scott stands in one of the remaining doorways. At least he knows he's safe in case of an earthquake.

Another view of the broken down walls. You can definitely get a sense of how much of it has overgrown.

And yes, another view. I really liked the look of the walls!

I liked this wall because it had trees growing out of it. Not something one expects to see growing atop a tall wall.

Scott and Mischa lean over one of the remaining walls and wonder if I'm done taking pictures yet.

Going out the back door... This was a strange door, half buried underground. You can also see the strangely domed mountain in the background. We wondered if hundreds of clay soldiers were buried there..
