Day 5 - Sighseeing to the West and South
On day 5 I finally coaxed myself out of bed in time to see the sunrise. It
was definitely worth it! I ended up taking over a roll of film and would have
taken more had I thought to bring more film.
The rest of the day was our sightseeing day. We hoped to check out all the
scenic things we'd missed to the west earlier and then end the day snorkeling
at Poipu. We headed out stopping at Wailua Falls and Hanapepe overlook.
Then we headed up to Waimea Canyon. This is a long and twisting drive. By
the time we got near the end we realized we weren't going to get back in time
to snorkel. We were pretty tired of being in the car at this point, so we
turned around at Koke'e. Turns out that one of the best vantage points was
about 3 miles from where we turned around. D'oh! Oh well, yet another
reason to go back!
We headed down to Po'ipu and sure enough, we didn't have enough time to snorkel
so we headed to Spouting Horn. It's similar to La Bufadora in Ensenada, Mexico. However, there's a second hole near
it that lets out a large HOOF noise as the water shoots up the blowhole.
Quite nifty if VERY touristy. Half the parking lot is reserved for
tour buses. We may have missed out on snorkeling, but we did get there in
time to see an amazing sunset!
Check out the
map if you want to see the location of the towns I'm
talking about.
There are a LOT of pictures here, so I broke them up into three batches. The
first batch are sunrise shots, the second group is all the sightseeing up to
Waimea Canyon, and the last batch is of Spouting Horn and the sunset.
